The pagoda-roofed museum is housed in the former Japanese building dating back to 1937 and hosts a large collection based on decorative arts, natural history, archaeology, and cultures of Sakhalin and its indigenous people. The whole collection consists of nearly 200000 objects. The most noteworthy of them are on display in numerous exhibition halls. Unique exhibits characterize land and marine flora and fauna of the island, depict mysteries of ancient cultures and peoples and tell exciting stories about Sakhalin’s exploration by Russian and Japanese settlers.
