The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin is the fortress in the historical center of Nizhniy Novgorod; besides, it is the most ancient part of the city. Today the Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian President' plenipotent, the governor of the Nizhniy Novgorod Oblast, and the city's mayor.
According to historical evidence, the Kremlin was built after 1516; the fire's former wooden Kremlin was destroyed. Novgorod was a place for reservist training at that time, so the city required a solid and protected fortification system. History says no enemies have ever managed to occupy the city and break through the Kremlin's walls.
The Kremlin was reconstructed several times, and restoration works are still in process; today, all Kremlin towers are kept in an almost genuine state, but only one of the multiple churches was preserved.
