Santa Clause - AKA Ded Moroz (Father Frost)

In America the Christmas icon is Santa Claus, however in Russia Christmas is centered around Ded Moroz and his granddaughter Snegorichka. The traditions are similar, but not everything is the same. Christmas in Russia is celebrated on January 7th according to the Orthodox Church, however Christmas in America as a popular cultural holiday is more closely related to the way New Years is celebrated in Russia.

Russian Winter and Banya!

The Russian winter is best known for being harsh and cold, but actually it is quite beautiful and there are lots of sports and traditions to take part in to cope with the cold. Cross country skiing and banya are two of my favorites. Skiing allows you to stay active and enjoy the snow and beautiful Russian countryside, while banya helps keep your spirit up and stay healthy and warm.
